It was a really good evening, with excellent organisational back up from Amy Wragg and the centre, a really cool place in a converted church, run by friendly and helpful people and obviously well appreciated and supported by the people of Norwich. I wish we had something like it in Belfast. We have arts centres, just not as cool as that, and we seem too judgemental a culture to give proper support to worthwhile enterprises without falling out with each other. I'm looking forward to the videos of the performances getting uploaded. Strong performances from me old mucker Jenni Doherty, also flown in from the Province, and two fabulous poets who study at UEA, Stephanie Leal and Agnes Lehoczky.
All in all, a frenetic 36 hours. We did more reading at an open mic in the Ten Bells across the road, and an interview with Radio Norfolk in the afternoon.
Next gig is Saturday 16th. Jan., when I'm on with Elvis McGonagle at the Black Box in Belfast.

November

Well the Dublin gig was a lovely evening, I liked the Cobalt Cafe and the mix of performances that Dublin is developing. I've been booked to go to Norwich in January with a posse of Belfast poets, and I've just got a spot supporting Elvis McGonagall at the Out To Lunch Festival on the afternoon of Saturday Jan 16th. in Belfast. Mostly I'm busy jobhunting at the minute, hence the lack of updates. I'll post some new pomes up soon.
Pipped at the post

Ah well, a great gig all in all. The final in Birmingham was an excellent evening, with about 350 people in the Conservatoire. I ended up with joint top score in the final round, with Ben Miller. At that point they used scores from the previous round, which gave Ben the title, and well done Ben. I'm pretty pleased with being such a close runner-up. It was all worth it to get reading my poems on Radio 4 on National Poetry Day and to help create a fabulous gig that the audience really enjoyed. In a day or two, I'll put up audio of my pieces from the final.
My next gig is on the 17th at the Cobalt Cafe in Dublin.
Thank you for listening Doctor.

Cafe Kraznapolsky

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v18.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D954cbeb52fe2e46c%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330353540%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D5F5B4D3C1E811740E46F172F3E2CCE5665C7BB78.82BFFC9011DFB0F6F32159351F41DEE334CDCA6E%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D954cbeb52fe2e46c%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DxJPz6xwsO-ZZ41HlYayQYQoLVfo&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Final approaches

So I'm in an agony of choice for the final, with poems vying for attention all over the place. It should be a good evening, Dublin is picking up some superb mixes of music, poetry and stand up. Jenni Doherty is holding the L/Derry contest, so a good Ulster team is likely. I'm still obsessing on which poems to use in the Radio 4 semi, and which to save for the unlikely event of making it to the final. I'm also gigging on the 16th at the Pavilion on Ormeau Road, Belfast. There's a new venue open mic gig on the 23rd August at Studio 23 in Derriaghy.
I hope to be performing in Temple Bar in October too, but I don't have the date yet. I'm writing new stuff, just having difficulty completing them and have a fine collection of part written gems, hopefully my editor mode will return to me now I've got the latest issue of Ulla's Nib to press. Mostly I'm reading Graves collected works at the moment, which is a larf and to be recommended to all heretics and iconoclasts.
If I can ever work out how to post audio and link it here, I'll stick up some performance. However, having fought with the program all weekend, I actually have some poems up. Mostly I hope to put up stuff about the poetry and literature scene here in Belfast and the stuff I do. I gigged in Dublin recently, which you can get a review of at http://theblogsthejob.blogspot.com/2009/06/get-fuck-out-of-way-and-make-room-for.html
I've also just qualified for the Radio 4 Poetry Slam semi-finals in Liverpool on September 12th. I was in the UK Slam Championship final a couple of years ago. I also organise quite a few events and slams as I go on, and I'll try to keep these noted here. Currently I'm getting my head down to edit Issue 8 of the quarterly magazine I edit, Ulla's Nib, older issues of which can be downloaded at <a expanse
It’s a bottom heavy profession
And the trouble with
The modern film genre
Is that I can’t bring myself
To identify with american people
Or care much what might
Happen to them in fictional situations
But fat arsed Richard Gere
Desperately running through
His asanas<br mallquakes
And sudden portents
The highways are made
Of concrete slabs
And on hot concrete tyres
Rumble with wee squealy noises
Like pigs
Accepting a bribe
Gracelessly
Which in Richard’s case
Constitutes heavy irony
Pulling his way
Into the Zellers carpark<br
